How to Import Products into Shopify (Step-by-Step Guide)

Importing products with a CSV file is the fastest way to add many products to a Shopify store at once. Instead of creating every product by hand in the admin, you prepare a single spreadsheet, upload it once, and Shopify creates all the products for you. This guide walks through the whole process step by step, including the most common errors and how to avoid them.

What you need before you start

The import process is straightforward, but a little preparation saves a lot of time. Before you begin, make sure you have:

• A CSV file in Shopify's official product import format.
• Access to your Shopify admin (Products → Import).
• Optionally, a tool that generates the CSV for you — more on that at the end.

Step 1 — Prepare your CSV file

Shopify expects a very specific spreadsheet format. The first row of the file must contain the exact column names Shopify uses — starting with Handle, Title, Body (HTML), Vendor and so on. Do not rename or translate these headers, or the import will fail.

Every product needs at least a Handle and a Title. All other columns are optional and can be left empty. If a product has variants (for example sizes or colors), each variant gets its own row, and all rows of the same product share the same Handle.

Step 2 — Upload the file in Shopify admin

In your Shopify admin, go to Products → Import. Click Add file, choose your CSV, and then click Upload and continue. Shopify checks the file and shows a preview of what is about to be created.

Step 3 — Review the preview and confirm

The preview tells you how many products will be created and warns you about any problems it detected. If everything looks right, click Import products. Your products will be created — you can watch the progress in the Products list, where each product shows an "importing" status until it is fully processed.

Common errors and how to fix them

Most failed imports come down to a few usual suspects:

• Invalid CSV header — the first row does not match Shopify's exact column names. Use an official template or a tool that generates the correct format.
• Missing Handle — every row needs a Handle; it is what groups variants together.
• Duplicate handles — the same Handle used for different products will merge them into one. Keep each Handle unique.
• Wrong price format — prices must be plain numbers like 24.99, without currency symbols or thousand separators.
